The Punjab chief minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, on Friday said that Bhai Taru Singh had set a new precedent for the Sikh community with his supreme sacrifice.

According to Amarinder Singh, martyrs have played a significant part in the Sikh community’s growth and development.

Shaheed Bhai Taroo Singh Ji established a new example for the Sikh community by serving Sikhism with all his courage through tough times, and, as per Mr. Singh, his unmatched martyrdom is honored.

“Martyrs have played a major role in the growth and development of the Sikh community. By serving Sikhism with all his valour, Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh Ji set a new precedent for the Sikh community and we salute his unparalleled martyrdom,” the Punjab CM tweeted.

Born in 1720 into a Sandhu Jat family in Amritsar during the reign of the Mughal Empire, Bhai Taru Singh was raised as a Sikh by his widowed mother.

Taru Singh became a prominent Sikh martyr known for sacrificing his life, in the name of protecting Sikh values, by having had his head scalped rather than cutting his hair and converting to Islam.

Upon his refusal to forsake his religion, in a public display, Bhai Taru Singh’s scalp was cut away from his skull with a sharp knife to prevent his hair from ever growing back.
