November 25th: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
The premise of the day is to raise awareness for rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence
The violence against women prevails in every part of the world at different levels. It is high in some places and very low or none at other places. To eliminate this violence, there are various awareness measures taken by people every now and the. One such step towards elimination of women violence is observed each year on 25th November: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The United Nations General Assembly has identified 25th November as a day to raise awareness towards violence faced by Women. Women are victims to rape, domestic violence, sexual harassment, physical violence, etc. In our World today, violence against women and girls is one of the most spread and persistent human rights violation. It remains highly unreported due to the shame and silence around it.
The violence against women and girls has adverse psychological, sexual and reproductive health consequences. Gender-based violence is another aspect that can happen to anyone, anywhere, however, some are more vulnerable, like young girls, elderly women, bisexual, transgender, migrants, etc. This remains as an obstacle for women and girls to achieve development, peace and equality.
Each year is a different theme for observing this day. In 2018 the official theme was “Orange the World: #HearMeToo’ and for 2019 it was ‘Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape’. The theme for this year is ‘Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!’ This year’s international day will mark the beginning of 16 days of activism. Several iconic buildings and landmarks are painted orange to show unity against women violence. This way people recall the goal of building a violence-free future.
