January 16th: National Nothing Day in the United States

A day dedicated to doing nothing might be a dream for some of us, however, the United States of America celebrates ‘National Nothing Day’ today.

Do you ever feel that you need a day to do nothing and still not feel ashamed? Are you in need of a break from your daily routine? Well, then today is your day as it is National Nothing Day in the United States. This day has been celebrated for over 50 years now. Since 1973, every year on 16th January Nothing Day is celebrated. As the name suggests, there is not much to say about this day.

History and Significance

In 1972, Harold Pullman Coffin, a journalist proposed a day to do nothing called as a ‘non-event’. The ‘Chase Calendar of Events’ features National Nothing Day the next year. Since then, the day became well known and this day is sponsored by the ‘National Nothing Foundation’. As this day is meant to be an ‘un-event’ promotion of this day is kind of contradictory.

This day was meant to be a day that provides Americans with a National Day when they don’t have to celebrate, honour or observe anything.

Celebrating Nothing Day

So as the name suggests, there is not much you can do on this day to celebrate it. All you need to do is sit back and relax. It seems to be difficult to believe that you can have a national day to do nothing. If you wish to have a bit of fun today, then you can play a simple game all day. All you have to do is use the word ‘nothing’ in every sentence or phrase that you say on today.
