January 8th: African National Congress Foundation Day

The African National Congress Foundation Day was a prominent Day in their struggle for freedom.

The struggle for freedom of Africa from the British has a long history. It goes back to the days when the Africans fought with spears in their hand against the British and the Boer colonisers. In the struggle for freedom, the African National Congress (ANC) has played a major role. ANC has fought for their land, against low wages, and many such concerns of the country and its people.

History

In 1910, Britain handed over the control of the African kingdoms to the Boer and British settlers themselves when it gave them independence. Soon, the union of South Africa was formed which recognized the rights of the white people over the black people. Africans were trying to fight for their land and wages. In 1911, to forget the differences of the past and unite together, Pixley ka Isaka Seme was called on Africa.

On January 8th 1912, representatives of the people’s and church organizations, and other individuals in Bloemfontein gathered together and formed the African National Congress. The aim of this formation was to bring together all the Africans as one and to defend their rights and freedom.
